In a recent press conference, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) secretary Jay Shah answered several questions about the upcoming plans. The discussions included providing special funds for hosting test matches and the chances to organize pink ball cricket in India. One such fact he revealed was that the BCCI declined the request of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 due to political conflicts. He said that hosting the upcoming multi-format series against Bangladesh is more important for BCCI, which starts with the red ball series from September 19 onwards.
The question was raised considering the ongoing protests in Bangladesh and India was considered an alternative option in front of the ICC (International Cricket Council), for relocating the World Cup. Based on the previous schedule, the Women’s T20 World Cup was planned to be hosted at two different venues starting from October 3.
Certainly, there would be a clash between both events if BCCI had accepted to host the grand tournament.
Jay Shah’s Opinion About Hosting Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: Says Bangladesh Series is Crucial
Jay Shah made a clear statement while answering the questions of the reporters at the Times Group’s office in Mumbai:
“See! The ICC requested that we would conduct the Women’s T20 World Cup. Without any comprise, I said NO! At present, we’re in the monsoon season, and on top of that, we will host the women’s ODI World Cup in the next year. Mainly, I don’t want to give any kind of impression saying that I want to host two consecutive World Cups in a year.
Till now, we’ve not discussed anything with them (the authorities of Bangladesh Cricket Board). Since a new government has taken charge there (in Bangladesh), they might send an important message soon or else I will contact them. The Bangladesh series from September 19 to October 13 is extremely important to us,” Jay Shah said.
The Bangladesh series is a part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle 2023-25. Perhaps, this could be one of the main reasons why BCCI rejected the offer of hosting the women’s T20 World Cup. Most importantly, the men’s team could take advantage of the home conditions to win the series and retain their top position in the WTC points table 2023-25 to participate in the next year’s finals and claim the maiden championship title.
Jay Shah About Hosting Pink Ball Test Cricket in India
Furthermore, Jay Shah indicates BCCI’s cautionary approach towards hosting day-night test matches in India. He pointed out that the pink-ball test in the nation usually concludes within 2–3 days, which ruins the traditional five-day format and the competitive nature of the longest format of cricket.
“Not now! You might have observed spectators buying a ticket for a five-day test match, but the game concludes within 2 to 3 days and there is no refund at all. Not only the spectators but also the broadcasters lose a huge sum of money. We have to consider their sentiments also. However, I’m slightly emotional about this matter,” Jay Shah said.
When asked about the test matches concluding within two to three days, Jay Shah shared his opinion:
“No! It doesn’t happen often. If it rarely happens and the opponent team performs poorly, how can I assist them? When our players perform well, I can’t demand them to ensure to continue the match for a longer time,” Jay Shah added.
Despite the excitement about playing the test match under lights, it has been more than two years since India hosted a pink-ball format. However, the Indian cricket team will be playing the pink-ball test during their tour to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from 22nd November 2024 to 07th January 2025.
Providing Special Funds for Test Cricket:
Mainly, Jay Shah points out that an additional fund is required for the long-term survival of the longest format of cricket:
“ Exactly! Being a member of the Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) of ICC, I suggest that there should be a separate fund allocated for test cricket. I agree that hosting test matches might be expensive. Upon receiving the approval from ICC, we can take necessary actions. As of now, we’re trying to come up with a special fund for test cricket.
Considering the women’s test matches and the chances to inaugurate a World Test Championship for them, it would only be possible if all the countries start playing red-ball cricket.
The reality is that other countries are not playing test cricket apart from these women’s national teams such as India, Australia, and England. Whereas, South Africa and New Zealand started playing test matches recently. You will observe tremendous progress when all countries start playing test cricket and give a huge priority to the format,” Jay Shah clarified.
Conclusion:
Based on the above meeting, it is understood how much Jay Shah is concerned about test cricket when compared to other formats of the sport. It becomes clear that BCCI gives preference to the upcoming Bangladesh series over the Women’s T20 World Cup as a strategic vision and commitment to the growth and development of Indian cricket. Finally, BCCI aims to maintain the importance and value of test matches in the modern era of limited overs cricket
