The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India)  generated a total revenue of INR 11,769 Crores and witnessed a surplus profit of INR 5,120 Crores from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2023.

This indicates that the Indian Cricket Board experienced year-to-year growth of 78% and an additional 116% increase in the income of INR 2,367 Crores it earned when compared to the IPL 2022 season. Similarly, the BCCI earned lucrative profits from the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023.

One of the main reasons behind BCCI’s boost in earnings is due to the increase in the percentage of franchise fees, new media rights, and sponsorship deals. Additionally, Tata Sons paid a hefty price tag to retain the IPL title rights for the next five years till 2028 by edging out the Aditya Birla Group.

Despite BCCI’s expenditure increased by 66% to INR 6,648, the overall financial profits highlight the consistent growth and success of the IPL under the latest media and sponsorship contracts.

Profits BCCI Earned for IPL 2023 from Media Rights

Based on the reports provided by the Economic Times, BCCI’s major growth commenced with the IPL 2023 season and was due to the media rights for the 2023-27 cycle. 

The overall rights were sold for a whopping price of INR 48,390 crores, out of which Disney Star acquired the satellite rights for INR 23,575 crores, and Viacom18 Network’s JioCinema bagged the digital rights for INR 23,758 crores.

Notably, Disney Star was the only media rights holder of the IPL between 2018 and 2022 and the company paid a huge amount of INR 16,347 crores for the five-year rights.

Based on the annual report, it is understood that the BCCI’s income from the media rights for IPL 2023 increased by 131%. In simpler terms, the income surged from INR 3,780 crores in 2022 to INR 8,744 crores in the 2023 season.

IPL Franchise Fees and Sponsorship Revenue Earned By BCCI:

Interestingly, BCCI’s earnings from the franchise fees glimpsed an increase of 22%, thereby reaching a total amount of INR 2,117 crores, when compared to the previous edition of INR 1,730 crores. Whereas, the 2% surge in the sponsorship revenue witnessed an overall profit from INR 828 crores to INR 847 crores.

Profits BCCI Earned for WPL 2023

It is confirmed that BCCI earned a surplus profit of INR 377 crores from the opening season of the WPL in 2023.

Combining the media rights, franchise fees, and sponsorships, the total amount generated from the league equals upto INR 636 crores. The expense paid for the WPL equals upto INR 259 crores and subtracting the expense amount results in the total profit of INR 377 crores generated from the season.

Furthermore, Pankaj Chaudhary— Minister of State for Finance revealed to the Rajya Sabha that the BCCI has invested INR 2,038 crores in Goods and Service Tax (GST) during the finance years 2023 and 2024. 

BCCI Earns Profits by Selling IPL Titles and Associate Sponsorships

Mainly, the BCCI sold IPL title rights to for INR 2,500 crores for 5 years (from 2024 to 2028). Additionally, they earned a surplus of INR 1,485 crores by selling associate sponsorships to the branded companies in the market such as RuPay, AngelOne, MyCircle11, and Ceat.

At the end of the financial year in 2023, the BCCI’s bank balance tallied upto INR 16,493.2 crores in different savings, current accounts, and Fixed Deposits. This increased the profit to INR 10,991.29 crores in a year.

Especially, during the IPL 2023 season, the BCCI paid INR 4,670 crores to the IPL franchise from the central pool, which is double the amount of INR 2,205 crores spent in the previous season.

Finally, it becomes clear that the board’s extra funds increased 38% to INR 3,727 crores during the financial year 2023 and the 50% increase in income to INR 6,558 crores and expenditure upto 70% to INR 2,831 crores.
