Team India’s former cricketer and current head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about the importance of players’ fitness to defend the title at home in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026.
After India’s 2-1 victory against Australia in the 5-match T20I series, Gambhir opened up that his team isn’t fully prepared for the next edition’s T20 World Cup.
India has 10 more T20Is to play ahead of the World Cup in 2026—five each against South Africa and New Zealand at home.
The 44-year-old expects a fearless approach from his team and hopes for a flexible batting line-up to attain success in the shortest format of international cricket.
‘An Overrated Batting Order’: Gambhir’s Opinion
Gautam Gambhir feels that India’s batting line-up has been overrated (excluding the opening combination) and demands flexibility ahead of the ICC’s high-profile tournament:
“Yeah! Ever since I took over the head coach role, the fluid batting order has been the basic idea right from Day 01. So far, nothing has changed since the Sri Lankan tour the previous year.
Except for the openers, I believe that the team’s batting order has been overrated. As the two opening batters are permanent, I believe that everything should be shuffled. Mainly, the impact matters a lot rather than the number of runs compiled in T20I cricket.
And there are moments when people miscalculate or don’t understand the difference between runs, impact, and batting order. But, you need to know well how runs and impacts differ from each other.
Especially in T20 cricket, there are 120 balls, and it is all about how impactful an innings you play every ball,” Gambhir said.
Players’ Fitness Not Upto Gambhir’s Expectations
As per Gautam Gambhir’s point of view, his players haven’t matched his expectations in terms of fitness levels to triumph in the T20 World Cup:
“No! Speaking from the fitness point of view, we still haven’t attained what we wanted to achieve in the T20 World Cup. And this was the conversation we had with our boys.
We want to be highly sharp, fit, and move swiftly. The more we are fit, the stronger we can be mentally. This is because pressure comes from the games. In other words, the pressure situation makes you physically and mentally strong.
Although the dressing room has been transparent and honest as we expected, we still haven’t reached where we wanted to be before the tournament.
Still, we have three months left for the T20 World Cup, and this could be an opportunity for us to stand where we wanted to be,” the former Indian opener said.
Does India Have an All-Round Advantage in the T20 World Cup 2026?
Gautam Gambhir revealed how India’s all-rounders gave a perfect balance in the batting and bowling line-up across different conditions of the match:
“Certainly! We have spin bowling all-rounders like Axar Patel and Washington Sundar who can bowl as well as bat down the order. Also, they can fit into the team purely as a full-time batter.
It is truly amazing to have talented cricketers like them who can play a very crucial role in big tournaments like the World Cup. Additionally, in the sub-continental conditions as well, they can flourish in any kind of situation.
With three months remaining (for the World Cup), we hope that we will be upto our standards,” Gambhir added.
The Indian head coach focuses on maintaining seven to eight bowling options, which could only be possible featuring players like Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Shivam Dube in the starting XI.
Notably, Team India’s batting line-up extended till the No.8 position in Gambhir’s era, as well as ensuring not to compromise the quality of the bowling attack.
‘Want to Play The Game With Fearless Approach’: Gambhir’s Target
Furthermore, Gautam Gambhir clarified that he not only focuses on individual performances, but also on the entire team’s contributions as well:
“See! We don’t want to play cricket, thinking too much about the batting strike rates and averages. Mainly, we review the level of impact a player can create in challenging situations.
As the T20 cricket continues to evolve, and if we (referring to coaches) don’t change, we are certain to fall behind the eight, which we don’t want to happen.
To explain in simpler terms, we want to stay advanced in the T20 cricket, and our young players have adapted it so well. We hope that they continue to be adapted to the format and develop in the future.
Even though there is a high risk, it is highly rewarding as well. We are striving to make this team fearless. And at the same time, we expect them to play smart cricket as well,” Gambhir explained.
Final Thoughts
According to Gautam Gambhir, an unchanged batting order in T20 cricket is absolutely overrated. He believes that apart from the openers, the rest of the players should be ready to bat at any position in the batting order.
The Indian head coach’s statement comes after receiving severe criticism for changing the batting order frequently. Nevertheless, Gambhir, having set his focus for India to defend its crown in the T20 World Cup 2026, aims to build a flexible team that can adapt to formidable challenges in the 20-over format.
Especially, the former left-handed batter prioritizes the presence of all-rounders in the squad, given their versatility to add depth in the batting and bowling line-up.
The adaptability of the multi-talented Indian players promises to play a pivotal role in the forthcoming marquee event.
Overall, Gambhir sends a clear and strong message to Team India players to maintain fitness to be fortunate enough to participate in the forthcoming 10th edition of the T20 World Cup.
