India Says NO Traveling to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

ICC Champions Trophy 2025

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches closer, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has provided clarity to the ICC (International Cricket Council) that Team India wouldn’t participate if the tournament is solely hosted by Pakistan.

Based on the latest reports, it is confirmed that the Indian government hasn’t granted permission to the cricket team due to the strained political relationships with Pakistan.

Once again it is a huge missed opportunity for the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) to host the Indian cricket team’s matches after a long gap of 15 years. It was in 2008 when India played its last match in Pakistan in Asia Cup 2008. However, the Pakistani cricketers actively took part in the ODI World Cup 2023 held in India.

Although the PCB has been stubborn in hosting the entire tournament stating that the Indian players can reach their country safely, the uncertainties in security issues continue to be a huge concern.

Also, the PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has stressed mandating India’s written statement if they are unwilling to play the contest in Pakistan. However, there isn’t any update if BCCI has submitted any claims in writing or not. Naqvi says that upon confirmation he can openly discuss with the government of Pakistan and the media.

As a result, the ICC and PCB have to search for alternatives with the hybrid model promising to be the most suitable choice which includes possible venues such as the UAE (United Arab Emirates) and Sri Lanka. Currently, all the matches of the tournament’s ninth edition have been provisionally scheduled between February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan, but the ICC is yet to confirm the exact schedule and venue.

Alternate Venues to host Team India’s matches in Champions Trophy 2025

Let’s scrutinize the three possible venues that are suitable to host Team India’s matches if the Champions Trophy 2025 is held in a hybrid model:

1. India:

It is a known reality that BCCI ranks No. 1 on the list of the world’s richest cricketing boards. Furthermore, the BCCI Secretary Jay Shah’s promotion as the next ICC chairman could alter the decisions that could be favorable according to the Indian cricket team. Consequently, there are chances for India to host the ICC’s prestigious tournament. This would not only make traveling simpler but also allow the players to make maximum use of the home pitch conditions.

As it is expected, Pakistan would certainly raise objections as the initial decision was to host the entire tournament in its country.

2. UAE:

As the UAE is nearer to Pakistan, the logistical problems faced by the organizers will be rectified. Also, this is one of the favorite nations to host India’s matches in the next edition’s Champions Trophy. Moreover, the teams competing against India can easily travel from Pakistan to the UAE.

Especially, players can be accommodated in luxurious hotels and ICC has major control in Dubai.

At the same time, the hot weather conditions make it challenging for the teams to sustain longer, particularly in a 50-over format played per side. In addition, the UAE’s pitch conditions might not be suitable for India, which could be a huge concern to avoid hosting the tournament in the Middle Eastern countries.

3. Sri Lanka:

Once again Sri Lanka might be considered as a good choice, similar to the Asia Cup 2023 to host all the matches of Team India in the Champions Trophy. In recent times, there have been huge speculations that Sri Lanka has been under the radar as the main venue to host the grand contest. If such happens, then there are possibilities that all the matches could be held at Colombo which is a favorable venue for India to create another sensation in the forthcoming eight-team tournament.

Mohsin Naqvi Comments on India’s Refusal to Play Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan

In a recent conversation with the reporters in Lahore, Mohsin Naqvi voiced his disappointment saying that PCB has neither received any official statement from BCCI nor the ICC confirming India’s decision:

“See! We have mentioned a clear rule that the Indian Cricket Board must submit their statement in writing if they have any issues allowing their players to travel to Pakistan. For the past two months, there have been huge debates regarding the Indian team won’t arrive in Pakistan.

Currently, we haven’t received any update and have not discussed anything about the hybrid model. But, we are prepared to speak on this matter.

Suppose, the Indian media is covering this topic, then ICC should have given some letter to us or the Cricket Board should have submitted it somewhere. So far, I haven’t received such a letter or the PCB. If we receive anything in writing, then I will certainly share it with you (the media) and the Pakistan government to decide our plans. We don’t want cricket and politics to be combined. Also, there shouldn’t be any politics played in the sport of cricket. Finally, our main goal is to prepare for the Champions Trophy 2025 and make the tournament a grand success,” Mohsin Naqvi said
