Discussions about the high-profile player trade deal between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) continue to surge ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
A blockbuster player exchange deal is likely to take place with RR set to trade Sanju Samson for Ravindra Jadeja with CSK.
Meanwhile, the latest reports add a new twist that RR isn’t interested in a direct player swap and demands an additional player, which could mess up the exchange process.
Jadeja and Samson’s Exchange: A Fair Deal for CSK and RR?
With Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson worth INR 18 crore each, the trade deal seems to be much more balanced.
Coincidentally, Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson have represented their respective sides for a long time.
Samson has been the pillar of the Rajasthan Royals for 11 seasons. Jadeja, on the other side, represented the Chennai Super Kings since 2012 (except 2016 and 2017 when the franchise underwent suspension).
Earlier, the reports claimed that Samson, after IPL 2025, demanded a transition and requested RR to release him ahead of the upcoming season’s auction.
RR Complicates the Trade Deal With CSK
As per the insiders’ reports, RR has demanded South African middle-order batter Dewald Brevis alongside the spin bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as a part of the exchange deal.
Brevis, who joined CSK in the middle of the IPL 2025 as a replacement for the injured pace bowler Gurjapneet Singh, cemented his spot among the core players of the franchise. Following his impressive performance last season, every franchise is eager for the young Proteas batter to go under the hammer.
Later, the names of English all-rounder Sam Curran and Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana came into consideration alongside Jadeja. So far, neither of the two franchises has commented on anything about such demands.
Will Jadeja and Samson Get the Captaincy After the Trade?
Ashwin believes that there is no chance for Jadeja to be appointed as RR’s new captain after the trade deal. This is because the inaugural season champions aim to nurture young captains on a long-term basis:
“Absolutely! It is a fact that Jadeja isn’t a small player for CSK, given his noteworthy contributions in the past. As he commenced his IPL career with Rajasthan, it is good to end where he started.
But it will be difficult to lead the side in the very first year itself. You need to mingle with the rest of the squad. Having played with the Rajasthan Royals in the past, I am well aware of their culture. This is one such team that focuses on building youngsters and has a long-term connection,” Ashwin said.
Will Samson Be Appointed as CSK Captain After Trade?
Ashwin furthermore explained that the five-time champions might continue with Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captain as of now, rather than preferring Sanju Samson for the leadership role:
“Yeah! This could be a great deal for RR if Sam Curran is traded along with Ravindra Jadeja. He (referring to Curran) can certainly add depth to the fast bowling attack and contribute immensely with the bat, given his impressive batting form.
Likewise, CSK will gain benefits by roping in Samson. Having more money to spend in the auction, there are options to acquire Cameron Green as well.
But what about the spin bowling options? Will Green be able to play the best finisher role, or do the Super Kings need to search for Ben Stokes too? Only time will decide the franchise’s fate.
As this could be the first season for Samson with this franchise, I don’t believe that he would be given the captaincy. Perhaps, Ruturaj will be the best option to continue and go ahead, Ashwin said.
Balanced Squads and Future of CSK and RR
Ravindra Jadeja’s probable entry into the Rajasthan Royals squad promises to bolster the all-round unit (in terms of batting, bowling, and fielding), given his experience and match-winning abilities under pressure.
While Chennai Super Kings can ensure stability in the batting on a long-term basis with Sanju Samson’s inclusion either at the top or middle order batting line-up. Also, he seems to be the best choice for the wicketkeeping role as MS Dhoni is approaching nearer to the twilight of his cricket career.
Currently, the discussions between the two franchises are beyond rumors and are reported to have entered into a serious negotiation.
However, CSK and RR are yet to submit their written expression of interest (EOI) to the IPL Governing Council to ensure the launch of the biggest trade deal in the league’s history.
Only when all the players have signed their approval in writing, the final agreement be checked and officially approved by the league’s governing body.
With the last date for all IPL franchises to submit the retention list on November 15 (Saturday), the upcoming days will turn out to be highly decisive ones before making any big judgments.
