Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is set to travel to Pakistan for a short visit before the commencement of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 despite the continuing political tensions between the two nations.
The tournament commencing on February 19, takes place in a hybrid model with Pakistan hosting a majority of games. Whereas, Dubai hosts India’s matches in Group A fixtures as well as the first semi-final. If India qualifies for the final, the venue will be shifted from Lahore to Dubai.
Also, a few months back, there were severe debates surrounding the cricket world regarding Team India’s travel to Pakistan.
Moreover, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) confirmed that the Indian government denied granting permission to allow their players to board flights to Pakistan citing security issues. As a result, the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) was left with no option had to accept a hybrid model agreeing to host India’s matches at a neutral venue, in a similar pattern followed during the Asia Cup 2023.
While India will be playing all their matches of the tournament’s ninth season in the UAE, the main question arises if Rohit will be allowed to visit Pakistan to make his appearance in the opening ceremony.
Why Rohit Sharma Might Travel to Pakistan?
The latest reports revealed by the news agency IANS convey that Rohit Sharma is expected to visit the host nation Pakistan to take part in the opening ceremony of the ICC’s high-profile event returning after eight years. Probably, the PCB plans to conduct the tournament’s opening ceremony grandly on February 16 or 17 in Karachi.
According to traditional practice, all the participating team captains must appear for the ICC events season’s inauguration. If such happens, then it could be Hitman’s first visit to Pakistan after 17 years. Here’s what the IANS close sources said:
“Possibly! Team India’s captain Rohit Sharma will travel to Pakistan to take part in the opening ceremony of the Champions Trophy 2025. As it is the first ICC tournament held in Pakistan since the 1996 World Cup, the PCB plans to make this mega-cricket event a blockbuster that is returning to their nation after 29 years,” one of the close sources reported to IANS.
BCCI’s Response to the Reports About Rohit Sharma’s Travel To Pakistan
A close source to BCCI responded to the speculations that the decision hasn’t been taken yet regarding Rohit’s travel to Pakistan. The Board members will take into consideration this matter after the squads are officially announced for the CT 2025”
“Not Certainly! First, the squad should be announced, and then we have to look into this topic. Right now, the decision hasn’t been made so far,” BCCI’s one of the close sources clarified.
PCB Confident About Rohit Sharma’s Visit to Pakistan
One of the PCB’s sources voiced a confident statement that the entire Board is certain about the Indian captain’s arrival in Pakistan on the opening ceremony day. Furthermore, it was revealed that the PCB is waiting for a confirmation from the ICC (International Cricket Council) about the exact date of the photo session with all team captains and the press conference.
In addition, the source revealed that all the required approvals were collected by the PCB from its government. This helps instantly provide visas for captains, players, and other staff members of the team taking part in the pre-tournament events.
Keeping in mind the standard policies, the opening ceremony can be expected either on February 16th or 17th. This is because the defending champions Pakistan will kickstart their campaign in the season opener against New Zealand on February 19 at the National Stadium in Karachi.
Will Rohit Sharma Visit Pakistan for Champions Trophy 2025 Opening Ceremony?
BCCI is yet to confirm if Rohit Sharma will attend the event in Pakistan before traveling to Dubai ahead of Team India’s first match against Bangladesh on February 20. Also, the ICC has planned a group photoshoot with all eight team captains followed by a press conference before the commencement of the Champions Trophy 2025.
It is important to point out that the men-in-blue traveled lastly to Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup final match against Sri Lanka. Following the terror attacks in Mumbai on 26th November of the same year, Indian cricketers weren’t allowed to travel to the neighboring country due to the strained political relationship.
Suppose, Rohit doesn’t obtain any clearance from BCCI, then he would become the only Indian captain to avoid the captain’s press meet ahead of the event’s commencement in the history of ICC tournaments.
