T20 World Cup 2024: Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan may return home after the group stages

T20 World Cup 2024 Shubman Gil

Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan, the traveling reserve players of Team India in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 are expected to return home after completing the group-stage clashes in the United States. It means that neither Gill nor Avesh will be able to continue their campaign as substitutes in the Super Eights of the ongoing tournament. Whereas, the other set of reserve players such as Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed would possibly stay back till the completion of the men-in-blue’s T20 World Cup campaign.

After securing three massive victories against Ireland, Pakistan, and the United States, Rohit Sharma’s led Indian cricket team enters into the Super Eights as one of the unbeaten sides of the tournament. Team India finds itself in Group 1 of the Super 8 fixtures along with these three teams — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia.

On Thursday (13th June 2014), these two players traveled from New York to Florida by a chartered flight, organized for both the Indian and United States cricket teams, after the completion of the 25th match between these two teams on Wednesday.

Also, it was expected that these duo cricketers would fly back home after their last match in the Group A fixtures against Canada on June 15 (Saturday). However, the poor weather conditions in Florida not only resulted in a canceled match but also delayed the travel of Gill and Avesh.

Moreover, it was decided that the reserve players would ensure their presence in the squad until the completion of the group stages.

Let’s find out the possible reasons why Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan wouldn’t be traveling to the West Indies as reserves for the approaching crucial stages in the tournament.

Reasons why Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan could be excluded after the Miami Game in T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eights

These might be the certain possible logical reasons to release Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan before the commencement of the Super Eights in T20 World Cup 2024:

1. No Requirement for a fourth opening batter:

In the preliminary stages of the T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian cricket team has maintained the opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Although the duo’s opening partnership has been poor in the first three matches of group stages, Virat Kohli still gets a chance to bat at the top order.

Possibly, Yashasvi Jaiswal might get a chance to bat in an opening pair with Rohit Sharma. Mainly, the 22-year-old left-handed batter has an impressive track record batting on the West Indies pitches and can convert the starts into huge runs for his team. In such scenarios, there wouldn’t be any requirement for any fourth-opening batsman like Shubman Gill.

2. Inadequate Net Practice Sessions:

Neither the right-handed batter Shubman Gill nor the pacer Avesh Khan had enough opportunity to practice at the net sessions in New York. As the Indian cricket team is approaching the most crucial phase of the tournament, the management would only like to prefer the currently in-form players in the playing XI.

3. Rinku Singh’s dual ability:

Since the reserve player Rinku Singh was spotted frequently during the practice sessions, he could have maximum chances to accompany his team. This is because of his dual abilities to anchor the team’s innings and play an explosive finisher’s knock to accelerate India’s total.

Additionally, being a left-handed batter, Rinku Singh can replace the pace bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube, if the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma prefers to include a majority of spinners rather than pacers in the playing XI.

4. A Pacer Heavy Playing XI Team:

Even in the absence of Avesh Khan, Team India’s squad looks fully loaded with three frontline pacers namely Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh. When considering an absolute emergency, the all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube can prove to be a perfect backup, which could sum up to a total of five pace bowlers in the squad. In these conditions, Avesh Khan as a 6th pace bowler wouldn’t be able to find his place in the playing XI, which might force any one of the batters to be a part of bench players.

5. Shorter Turnaround Time:

Once the Indian cricket team reaches the Caribbean nation, there is hardly any time for the regular playing XI to get a practice session due to a shorter turnaround time. Possibly, the players could arrive in the West Indies just before the commencement of the game.

6. Khaleel Ahmed: A Perfect Substitute for Arshdeep Singh

The Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh has been enjoying the best moments in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. He has been in the peak form of his career by delivering back-to-back exceptional performances in the first three games played at Nassau County International Stadium in New York.

One of the main reasons why Khaleel Ahmed is retained as a reserve player rather than Avesh Khan is because of his excellent left-arm pace bowling techniques. In case, Arshdeep Singh faces any serious issues, then Khaleel can be the best substitute to solidify the strength of the pace bowling unit.

Conclusion:

It becomes clear that the travel and accommodations provided to Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan were valid up to the match against the United States unless there were any unexpected injuries to the players in the squad.

Another reason why these two cricketers flew along with their team is that it wouldn’t be possible for the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India)  to immediately find an alternative replacement for injured Indian players traveling to the US or West Indies.

Finally, it is understood that the Indian cricket team management is clear with the decision that they do not require four standby players. As a result, only Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed get preference to accompany the team during the Super 8s in the Caribbean nation.
