Indian captain Rohit Sharma and his teammate Virat Kohli have fewer chances to be a part of the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024 tournament scheduled between September 5 and September 22. This is because India will be playing the 2-match home test series against Bangladesh, which is a part of the World Test Championship Cycle 2023-25, starting on September 19 and completing on October 1.
According to the latest reports, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) will host the season opener of India’s domestic tournaments which includes the Duleep Trophy. Also, the KSCA confirmed that the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru will host the first out of six four-day red-ball matches. Although Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh was initially designated as the main venue for the multi-day tournament, the game has been shifted to Bengaluru.
Was it BCCI and Gautam Gambhir’s decision to change the venue to include international cricketers in the tournament? When was the last time Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli participated in the Duleep Trophy? Did any of the Duleep trophy seasons witness the Ro-Ko’s face-off? Is it mandatory for Rohit and Kohli to take part in the Duleep Trophy 2024 amidst the busy international cricketing schedule? Who are the top international Indian cricketers included and excluded from the tournament?
Let’s find out the answers to the above-mentioned interesting questions in detail…
Duleep Trophy 2024 Season Opener: BCCI’s Decision to Change the Venue
The change in venue points out the BCCI’s decision to allow top international and domestic cricketers to take part in the four-team Duleep trophy ahead of the home test series against Bangladesh starting on September 19. It is understood that the decision was made by the BCCI and selectors along with Team India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir in the process.
Why Gautam Gambhir Prioritizes Domestic Cricket Despite India’s Busy Schedule?
After delivering a flop show in the recently concluded 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka with 0-2, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir voiced the importance of domestic cricket in the red-ball format. Also, it is the former Indian cricketer’s first stint as the national team head coach in test cricket. As a result, Gambhir is determined to implement the same for the Indian national team cricketers ahead of the start of the series against Bangladesh.

Although Ishan Kishan might get selected for the tournament, veteran batters such as Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara have fewer chances of participating.
However, Team India’s talented pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been offered an extended break to effectively manage his workload and won’t be participating in the tournament.
It is confirmed that the Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya won’t make an appearance in the Duleep trophy after he stopped playing test cricket in August 2018. Also, Mohammed Shami, who was the star performer for India in the ODI World Cup in 2023 might not find his spot in the team, since he is undergoing rehabilitation after surgery.
Is it Compulsory for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to participate in the Duleep Trophy 2024?
NO! The BCCI has given complete freedom to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to decide if they want to participate in the Duleep Trophy 2024 or not. However, these duo batters are yet to give their confirmation if they want to play in the tournament or not.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s Previous Appearance Duleep Trophy Tournament
Let’s delve deeper to find out the previous time when Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli played in the Duleep Trophy:
Rohit Sharma:
It was in 2016 that Rohit Sharma participated in the Duleep trophy 2016 for India Blue, led by the present Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir at that time.
Batting at the fourth position, Rohit scored 30 runs from 57 balls (including 4 fours) in the first innings in the finals against India Red. Whereas, he remained unbeaten by scoring 32 runs from 75 balls (including 1 four and 1 six), batting at 3rd position in the 2nd innings. However, Rohit’s team won the finals by a huge margin of 355 runs, riding on Cheteshwar Pujara’s magnificent knock of 256 runs from 363 balls, which includes 28 fours.
Virat Kohli:
Compared to Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli had a long break from Duleep Trophy; since his last appearance fourteen years ago in 2010.
As a captain of North Zone in the 2009-10 season, Kohli scored a run-a-ball 56 by smashing 10 fours at a strike rate of 100.00 against the West Zone in the semi-final. It was the same match where Virat Kohli competed against Rohit Sharma for the last time in the Duleep Trophy.
Rohit Sharma vs Virat Kohli: The Ro-Ko’s Clash in Duleep Trophy
The Duleep Trophy was able to witness the intense clash between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli only once during the semi-final match between North Zone and West Zone in the 2009-10 season.
Wasim Jaffer’s led West Zone batted first and posted a total of 769-10 in 171.2 overs. It includes the crucial contribution of Rohit Sharma’s 63 runs from 93 balls (including 9 fours) at a strike rate of 67.74.
However, Virat Kohli played a captain’s knock by scoring 56 runs from 56 balls (including 10 fours). But, his team’s innings were bundled out for just 294 runs in 82.1 overs.
Surprisingly, Rohit Sharma returned with a destructive show in the 2nd innings and scored 116 runs from 129 balls (including 11 fours and 5 sixes) at a strike rate of 89.92. Also, he maintained a 172-run partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara and steered his team’s total to 345-7 in 89 overs.
Finally, the match concluded with a draw result; and the West Zone was declared the winner based on their first innings score.
Overall Thoughts:
Possibly, BCCI might have decided to invite international cricketers in domestic competitions to review the issue of players omitting the regional matches. Also, the board excluded Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the central contract list in the previous year as a part of this rule.
Moreover, the participation of Rohit and Kohli in the domestic tournament might exhaust their performance for the forthcoming crucial matches of their international cricket career. Perhaps, we might not witness the Ro-Ko’s action in the most awaited Duleep Trophy.
As the old zonal format based on different zones no longer exists; Ajit Agarkar’s led panel will select players in four new teams namely India A, India B, India C, and India D for the Duleep Trophy 2024. The first class competition takes place for four days in league format, there wouldn’t be any knockout stages. Rather, the tournament completes on 22nd September 2024 at the Rural Development Trust Stadium, Anantapur
