Big Chances For India And Australia After South Africa’s Win Against Sri Lanka in The WTC 2025 Final!

WTC

Every Test match of the 2025 WTC (World Test Championship) adds excitement and heat, determining the 2 finalists to clash. Especially after South Africa’s massive victory against Sri Lanka by 233 runs in Durban, the WTC 2023-25 points table has changed. Their glorious victory has paved a difficult way for Australia and India, so these 2 countries must be more conscious.

As a result, India and Australia will have to showcase stronger performance in their upcoming BGT (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) matches. And, that is the only case, where both the national cricket teams, IND and AUS will keep their hopes alive and will make their way to the WTC finals.

The WTC final clash is tentatively scheduled to be held at the Lord’s in June 2025 and every match played before that will be the “Finalist Deciding Factor”.

Let’s find out the WTC 2025 final qualification scenario of the top four teams in the points table– India, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

South Africa’s Rankings in WTC Table after their dominant win over Sri Lanka

All of a sudden, South Africa seems to have added a surprise to India and Australia by winning over Sri Lanka and moving to the top of the WTC points table. With this spectacular victory, South Africa has made its way to the 2nd Position in the points table of the World Test Championship with a PCT (Points Percentage) of 59.25.

The South African team is aiming to qualify for their first-ever World Test Championship final. However, they are having 3 more Test matches to be played, of which 2 matches are against Pakistan at home ground. Ultimately, they will have to win all these matches to reserve their spot at Lord’s.

Australia WTC Final qualifying scenario.

Standing in the 3rd position, now the national cricket team of Australia has got the real challenge to cross. As they are under immense pressure to perform well at the ongoing BGT (Border Gavaskar Trophy), the WTC 2023 champions’ qualification is solely based on their results against India.

However, Australia has a chance to qualify for the finals if they are capable of winning the series and gaining enough points. So nothing is out of their hands, as they are to play 4 more matches in their home ground, which might turn out to be in their favor.

South Africa WTC Final qualifying scenario.

Of nowhere, surprisingly, South Africa has surpassed Australia and reached the 2nd Position in the WTC points table with 59.26 PCT. Standing in the next after India in the points table was possible with South Africa’s 2–0 series win against Bangladesh and glorious 233-run victory over Sri Lanka.

However, South Africa must prove their capability of maintaining the same spirit and form throughout their upcoming matches against Sri Lanka and series against Pakistan. If they succeed in doing so, the national cricket team of South Africa might surely make their way to the WTC finals.

India WTC Final qualifying scenario.

At present, India stands at the 1st position in the points table of the World Test Championship with a PCT of 61.11 after a massive 295-run victory in the first test at the Optus stadium in Perth. However, they must win the BGT (Border Gavaskar Trophy) with a margin of either 5-0 or at least 4-0. If India can win this margin, the nation will be qualifying for the finals without depending on the results of other teams. By chance, if India slips out of this opportunity, then the team will have to rely upon the results of other WTC matches.

Sri Lanka WTC Final qualifying scenario.

Due to South Africa’s incredible winning, Sri Lanka has deteriorated from the 3rd to 5th position in the WTC points table. They need to bounce back in the second test by securing a huge victory (in terms of margin). Additionally, the 2-match home test series against Australia makes them remain active in the race.

Suppose Sri Lanka wins all the remaining three matches, they would secure a spot in the WTC finals with 69.23 PCT. Even by losing a single game, a 61.54 PCT could have strong chances for either India or Australia to move higher in the points table.

New Zealand WTC Final Qualifying Scenario.

The Black Caps earlier kept their second WTC final qualification hopes alive after a historical 3-0 whitewash against India. However, a recent 8-wicket loss to England has left the 2021 WTC champions clueless with 50.00 PCT. Also, remaining the two test matches in the last phase of the ongoing cycle would keep New Zealand questioned about breaching the 60 PCT. Although they are still in battle, it would be possible to secure a spot in the Lord’s final next year only if the top-ranking teams in the points table lose their few matches.
