On Saturday (18 January), the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) officially announced Team India’s 15-member squad for the forthcoming Champions Trophy 2025 and ODI series against England.
Rohit Sharma will lead the team, which includes several key players such as Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Hardik Pandya.
Interestingly, Yashasvi Jaiswal is set to make his ODI debut after exhibiting a sensational performance in the other two formats of international cricket.
At the same time, it was shocking to know that the selectors dropped Mohammed Siraj, who bagged 20 wickets in the 5-match test series against Australia. In addition, deserving talents like Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag were ignored from the selection process.
Although Jasprit Bumrah is named in the squad, he has yet to receive fitness clearance, and the selectors are hopeful that the speedster will make a comeback ahead of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Harshit Rana is included as a backup pacer only for the 50-over series against England, as BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar reveals that Bumrah is expected to miss the first two matches of the series. He is undergoing rehabilitation to heal his back injury sustained during the fifth test of the BGT 2024-25 (Border Gavaskar Trophy).

Why Mohammed Siraj was Sidelined from the Champions Trophy Squad? Rohit Sharma Reveals the Reason
Along with the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma attended the press conference on Saturday and clarified the reason for Mohammed Siraj’s exclusion from the squad:
“See! Unfortunately, Siraj misses out as we require only three seamers in the squad. Also, his contributions become less effective when he isn’t bowling with the new ball. In other words, he is completely dependent on the new ball. That is why we had to prioritize the bowlers who can make noteworthy contributions with the new ball, in middle overs and the death overs.
We believe that our pace bowling attack is balanced with the inclusion of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh. Also, we are not sure about Bumrah’s availability and if he is ready to participate or not. So we wanted Arshdeep to play the role at the back end, despite not playing a lot of ODIs but having been in the white ball squad for a long time. And Shami certainly has proven his abilities with the new ball,” the 37-year-old said.
Rohit Sharma About Yashasvi Jaiswal’s ODI Debut
As the rise of Yashasvi Jaiswal continues, Rohit Sharma showered praises on the 23-year-old left-handed batter’s abilities that earned him a deserving spot in the ODI squad:
“Really! Sometimes it is very difficult to ignore the numbers but just look at Jaiswal’s records and his performance shown in the past 6 to 8 months. Although he hasn’t played a single ODI, still he had been named in the squad due to his run-scoring potential,” Rohit said.
BCCI Chief Selector About Bumrah’s Availability for Champions Trophy 2025
Ajit Agarkar expects the BCCI’s medical team to provide reports about his fitness status in early February before the commencement of Champions Trophy 2025:
“Yeah! We are waiting for an official update regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness from the BCCI medical team, probably in the first week of February. Also, his bowling load will be relieved for the first five weeks. So, he won’t participate in the first two ODI matches against England.
It’s better if the medical department provides a clear report that could explain what exactly went wrong with Bumrah’s fitness. We hope by the estimated time frame, he would become alright,” Agarkar said.
Final Opinion:
Even though Yashasvi Jaiswal’s entry into the 50-over format created a sensation, the notable omissions of Sanju Samson, Mohammed Siraj, Riyan Parag, and Karun Nair have ignited debates among cricket analysts and fans.
Another shocking episode opens up as Shubman Gill retains his spot as the vice-captain of the ODI squad. Despite the 25-year-old’s struggling form in the BGT 2024-25, scoring 93 runs in 5 innings, his inclusion serving as Rohit’s deputy is an indication that he might be preferred as an opening pair to the Indian captain rather than Jaiswal.
